Bounce: First question for you, what do you do with Bad Boy Entertainment?
Jay Gatzby: I work in the promotions department for Bad Boy Entertainment which is responsible for radio and grassroots promotions across the US. We work with mixshow, club and mixtape DJs along with street teams that handle promotions for each artist release and promo tour. The promotions department is its own entity called Power Moves Marketing & Promotions that handles promotions for not only Bad Boy, but Sean John and everything else that comes through the Bad Boy network. Currently we are knee deep in promotions for HBO's Bad Boys of Comedy, destined to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Def Comedy Jam. PMI is owned by my boss and my mentor, Shawn Prez, who is also the Senior Director of Promotions for Bad Boy. Prez has taught me mountains of inside knowledge about the urban music industry. To me, Shawn Prez is truly a guru in this game. As the VP of Business Development for PMI, I secure marketing and promotional campaigns with clients across the board in the entertainment industry ranging from record labels, movies, television networks, video games, liquor and beverage brands and several other entities, in addition to managing promotions for our current roster of accounts.
Bounce: Tell me about Komposit Entertainment and bringing together the "Grand Theft Audio USA Tour starring Raghav."
JG: I started Komposit Entertainment in 1997 with my closest friend and business partner Sam Sneed. It began as an entity committed to bringing together people of all races and ethnicities through Hip Hop music and entertainment. It became the icon for diversity and urban music at the University of Michigan. We decided to rejuvenate Komposit now in 2005 with partners Lil Cee and Big Cuba and focus on exposing the urban South Asian entertainment scene to the rest of America who has yet to truly appreciate its potential; which will break down the racial barriers between us and thus foster further diversity inside and outside of the South Asian community.
The Grand Theft Audio USA tour is just the beginning. Having over 5 years of experience in the urban music industry, I am bringing time tested and proven techniques to the South Asian Entertainment scene to raise the standard of what Desis are used to. In addition, using contacts with urban and mainstream press, radio and record labels, this tour will expose Raghav, Bobby Friction & Nihal and the power of the South Asian community to an industry that is clueless of our relevance. Komposit seeks to use our partners knowledge to be the catalyst that crosses over the South Asian entertainment scene into the mainstream of America.
Bounce: Why is this tour called the GTA?
JG: The tour originates in Washington DC at Platinum on June 30, then onto Chicago at Chromium July 1, San Fran at Forum July 2, and then back home to NYC for a killer show on July 3 at Supper Club. Grand Theft Audio translates to the fact that this tour will steal the show in every market. It is the hottest tour of the summer. Raghav is such an incredibly talented, hard working R&B singer and Bobby Friction & Nihal have an intensely deep knowledge of music and a passion for progressing the South Asian scene. They are pioneers and originators of the Urban South Asian scene in the UK, its only fitting that they accompany a tour that is looking to achieve the same purpose in the US. And this tour will give all of them the exposure they need not only in the South Asian market but also in the mainstream market through retail signings, meet and greets, mainstream/urban radio interviews and intimate press engagements.
Bounce: What kind of exposure are we talking about here?
JG: Basically, we are working to get Raghav interviews on stations like WPGC in Chicago, KMEL in San Fran and WGCI in Chicago. In addition, we are reaching out to local and national press in the urban and mainstream media which will expose Raghav, Bobby Friction & Nihal to people outside of non-South Asian descent. Komposit Entertainment sees not only the South Asian element here in the US, which reaches two to three million, but also sees the rest of America who is not familiar with Raghav, yet.
Bounce: Ok the final question, this is the big one. Why should someone buy a ticket and attend any one of these shows? What are they truly getting from Komposit Entertainment?
JG: The Grand Theft Audio USA tour inside at Komposit Headquarters is known to us as the people's tour. We aren't following the old formula: get an artist, uncomfortably pack as many Desis as you can in the venue, while the promoters reap all the benefits. This tour is for the people and for Raghav. Our goal isn't to make money, its to put on a phenomenal event for you. This will be the tour to end all tours and begin a new era. Each show isn't just a club night, it's an experience. People are going to leave and be absolutely speechless. This tour was created with the concert goer in mind. We are not interested in over packing the venue to make an extra buck; we want to keep the door, and the crowd inside happy, because this is guaranteed to sell out. Close attention to detail and the perfect amount of hype will raise the bar of excitement and intrigue.
Raghav is doing a hot 30 to 40 minute set, while Bobby and Nihal, who are going to completely change the game here, will raise the bar for US Desi DJs. They will kill it on the turntables. We also have "Lil Cee" as the official tour DJ. In certain markets we have special acts, like a fashion show in NY by Alia Khan and a Hip Hop dance troupe performance by Got Soul. But at the same time we are limiting the opening acts to make the focus of each night, Raghav. This is an intimate concert show but will maintain the club vibe atmosphere. Everything will be put together very efficiently and the performances will completely compliment the vibe of the evening. We are not sparing a dime on top quality sound and lighting.
Finally, we are working with the best teams in each market: Blazin Beats in DC, Ecstacy Productions in San Francisco, All Star Entertainment in NY and the best of the best in Chicago.
