| D-Luscious, She Really Is! |
| We haven't had the pleasure of interviewing a hottie in quite some time. So just before it was too late, we got down and dirty (almost) with D-Luscious, a name you will be hearing more of! You heard it here first! |

She's a singer, rapper, dancer, songwriter and oh, so beautiful! With exciting hot looks and a booty that J-Lo can envy, her star is rising and about to shine upon all of us.
The Canadian born artist, D-Luscious (she really is!) is only 22 years old and has already released her first album entitled "D-Luscious Style." She's a Desi girl, and we're proud of it, but it doesn't even matter what the color of her skin is, she's a rapper who's singing about life. The lyrics are deep, and her songs have soul to them. I loved listening to her and was just burning with questions to ask, so read on!
Pauleen Arneja: D-Luscious is a beautiful name for a beautiful girl, but is that your real name? I think you look like an Alisha, Nisha or maybe even a Mandeep!
D-Luscious: Is Da' Brat's real name Da' Brat? Is Ludacris' real name Ludacris? If you can tell me their real names then I'll tell you mine. (winks)
PA: Ok, I will have to do some more research then. Was rapping and being in the entertainment industry a childhood dream or was it something that just came about by chance for you? How did you get started into the whole rapping thing?
DL: I've been writing and rapping since I was 11 years old. I used to write a song a day, whether it was during class or late at night in bed. I look back at some of the material I wrote at like 11 and 12 and it gives me goose bumps and I always say to myself "I can't believe I wrote that!"
PA: When I first saw the cover of your CD I noticed two things. One, there was a Parental Advisory on it, and two, there was an Indian girl on the cover. That totally set off sirens in my head and I thought to myself "I wonder what kind of stuff she had to go through growing up!" So D-Luscious tell me the scoop on what it was like being the only Indian girl on the block who wanted to rap about sex. How did people try to stop you and what sorts of roadblocks came in your way?
DL: I think I had a pretty normal life growing up. At first, no one knew about my fantasies of becoming a "Hip Hop Star." I kept it to myself until I decided to enter a Human Rights competition in grade seven. I wrote a song about racism, recorded it with some help from my girls and sent it off. I won first place. 300 schools participated and I won. It was after that when my parents found out. They thought it was brilliant, I guess only because I was rapping about racism at the time. Anyway, no one really tried to stop me from writing and performing at local talent events because I don't think they took me seriously. My parents thought it was only a phase in my life that I would get over.
Sex is not what my music is about. How people get that idea, I have no clue. I have songs on my album that reflect a number of issues. One particular one is #10 "Angel in Disguise." I wrote that song after my Grandma passed away. Another is #9, "Rough Times." This one actually is about all the hard times my family and I had to go through. So there is a whole variety of topics that I cover in my album, not just sex.
"...about how I should get back to making Roti. All I got to say to that is, I can do both at the same time..."
PA: What career path would you have chosen if you hadn't pursued singing?
DL: I actually wanted to be a Cop back in high school. Crazy, huh?
PA: I think guys would've liked getting pulled over by you. (laughs) It takes a strong person to rebel and chase their dreams. What motivated you to keep on going D-luscious? Why didn't you stop when things got tough?
DL: When things got tough, that is when I wrote my best songs. When things got tough, that is when I closed my eyes and pictured being in this world I am in now, with an album, fans, interviews... all of it. If you start giving up on things that you love when things get tough, then you really don't love what you're doing. Hard times should only drive you to work harder.
PA: Who have been your biggest inspirations musically? NSync? Just kidding. Who do you admire and maybe try to shape yourself after?
DL: My true inspirations are Tupac Shakur and Da' Brat. Especially Tupac! He modeled the skills I admire. I don't necessarily shape myself after him, but look upon his music for encouragement and motivation when I'm lacking it.
PA: What sort of criticism, if any, have you received from fans and non-fans out there? Have any Desi parents gotten upset by your lyrics or music? Has anyone given you a pat on the back for doing what you do?
DL: Honestly, I have not yet received any negative feedback from parents. They may have a lot to say behind my back, but not directly to me. My fans are the best. The only thing that I hear sometimes is that I should collaborate more with Desi DJs and artists. I'm on top of that. I do get that odd person leaving me emails about how I should get back to making Roti. All I got to say to that is, I can do both at the same time.
PA: Are you serious? A roti? Damn that's harsh! Ok, so when you listen to the album, you would never know a Desi girl is singing unless someone told you. Do you consider that a compliment? Is that the style you were trying to achieve? Do you want to be known as a Desi singer, or just, D-Luscious, a female artist?
DL: When I released my album, I wasn't even thinking that I would be labeled as a Desi rapper. I was simply going for the mainstream because that is what my music is. Since the release though, I have received so much love and attention from my people that I'm cool with whatever you want me to be. Just remember, I am a Rapper.
As far as my lyrical style and flow, I don't practice to sound a certain way. Although when I was younger I listened to only Hip Hop artists and studied their flow, and practiced rapping over their instrumentals. That probably influences my style today.
PA: What are your plans for a second album? What other plans do you have for the future?
DL: I just released my first album 'D'luscious Style' in October, so currently we are working to promote it. We will be doing a video and it should be out this Spring. My team is also working on a Canadian tour and after that we are coming to the UK baby!
PA: D-Luscious, for all those poor guys who are drooling at your pictures, are you single?
DL: Yes indeed. A very busy single Gal.
