Well I must say, this is the first full Desi rap CD I've ever listened to. I was always impressed by the bits of rap in Desi remix CDs, but this really was a treat. Who am I kidding, treat? It was off da hook!
These guys really know how to rappify the Punjabi "bruah's" and "aye hay's." From whiskey to cash to girls these tracks cover all crowds of gangsta rap. Sugar Kane Records took the best Desi Rappers out there and put 'em all in one CD. It makes it easy for those of us, who aren't completely in the rap scene, to know who and what is going on in the Desi rap world. Artists in this album include Bohemia, Kurrupt, DJ Scorpio, Quincy, Labh Janjua, Deep, Big Suga Kane and many more. The crew is very multicultural which makes the group more unique. The variety of character and background is prominent in the tracks but their common musical language pulls it all together to form an awesome blend of voices and beats.
My favorite tracks were Love Letter, Punjab Gangsta, and 9 til 2. There is also an awesome female rapper D'luscious who you must listen to. Another good track is Paper Chase, it's got a cool blend of electronica, an Indian string instrument, an awesome rap beat, and American rap (in English) and Desi rap. That track really gives you a sense of how many different genres and cultures these guys are pulling from to come up with the perfect tracks. From the clearly Eastern influence found in the music, to the Western approach of rapping this album begs to be heard by both Desis and non-Indians alike. Overrall, this CD is straight gangsta with an interesting kick of Desi hooks and lyrics. Just like most rap, the gangster mentality comes to the forefront through lyrics, but what sets this album apart is the unique use of eastern beats in contrast to these western lyrics.
I definitely recommend this album to anyone that is into rap. And if rap isn't your thing but you're just curious about how modern artists are mixing the best of east and west, this CD is for you... and trust me it'll surprise you in a good way!
