Recuperating from what he describes as a shock that only a cancer patient can understand, 30-year-old Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh says he hopes to be back in action for the World Twenty20 tournament.
Yuvraj has begun his training at Bengaluru's National Cricket Academy (NCA) and told the media that he was hoping to represent India at the world Twenty20 tournament that will be held in Sri Lanka in September. Yuvraj was spotted at the NCA along with India players Virender Sehwag, Irfan Pathan, Varun Aaron, RP Singh and Ishant Sharma.
"Slowly my body will get stronger. The Twenty20 World Cup is the target. I want to come back and play for India and that is my goal. I am trying very hard. I have gone through a lot. The body has gone through many shocks," Yuvraj explained. "Yes I am focused on the World Cup, but at the moment I cannot say for certain. I need to strengthen my body. I need to do my cardio and need to work on my body for a month and a half," Yuvraj added.
Talking about getting back into the rhythm of playing cricket Yuvraj said, "I have started batting again; however, the body was a bit shaky when I started training. Gradually I have improved. After a month and a half I will be in a different state." Acknowledging the support that he has received from fans, Yuvraj said, "The response has been great and overwhelming, I feel much loved and the wishes of the whole country matters. I want to come back and play for India, that is my goal," however, Yuvraj also insisted that he did not want to rush his comeback, "People are expecting me to come back very quickly, but I do not want to rush. I will have to take my time and come back 100 percent fit. I am trying to get fit before the World Twenty20."
Talking about his emotional battle against cancer Yuvraj said that only a cancer patient could understand what he was going through, "Initially, it was hard to accept that a guy like me who is training six to seven hours a day, running around all the time as an athlete, can get diagnosed with something like this. It took a long time to sink in but eventually I made peace with it. I knew I have an issue and I have to sort it out," Yuvraj said.
Yuvraj's last one day international was the World Cup final on April 2, 2011 against Sri Lanka. Months later Yuvraj was diagnosed with a rare germ-cell cancer between his lungs and underwent chemotherapy in the US. His last match for India was a Test against West Indies in Kolkata in November 2011. After two and a half months of chemotherapy in the US, Yuvraj came back to India on April 9.
