While most of his novels already boast of a movie based upon them, '2 States', a narration based upon his own love story is soon to be adapted on celluloid too. You would recall that Chetan Bhagat has been closely associated with Bollywood ever since the tech junkie turned to writing. His very first book titled 'One Night @ The Call Centre' had been a source of inspiration for the movie 'Hello' which although failed to win its audiences' hearts at the box office, nevertheless acted as Bhagat's launching pad.
Bhagat subsequently got involved into a war of words post the release of '3 Idiots' when he accused its makers of not giving him due credit for borrowing tits and bits from his bestseller - 'Five Point Someone'.
When the celebrated author wrote '2 States', it was almost certain that a movie will eventually be based on it. Although we had been hearing of such a movie for the past 2 years, due to one reason or another the project kept getting postponed. Back in October 2010, an excited Bhagat had tweeted that the deal for his book '2 States' which narrated the tale of how he met his wife was done.
'Shooting early next year. They've promised a big family entertainer. Very excited. Thanks for ur support,' Bhagat had tweeted sometime in December 2010. The film was initially to be directed by Siddharth Anand of 'Anjana Anjani' fame and it was Saif Ali Khan who was to play Krish, the protagonist. But now we hear that the producers have finally chosen Vishal Bharadwaj to direct the movie. Sajid and Vishal will coproduce the film in which the male protagonist will now be played by Imran Khan. However, the question of who gets to portray the role of the female protagonist, Ananya, is still not decided.
A source closely associated with the movie recently told a tabloid, "2 States is a love story of a Punjabi boy and a South Indian girl. If Sajid Nadiadwala would be looking at an actress who brings in a certain authenticity of playing a South Indian character, the choice boils down to only two heroines - Asin and Deepika Padukone - due to their roots. Moreover, Asin has a good experience of working in films down South as well so that's an added advantage. Incidentally, Sajid has a good tuning with both since he has worked with them in the Housefull franchise".
But given that Piggy Chopps is also being considered for the role, the source added, "She is a capable actress though and if given an opportunity, she would go for it. After all, didn't she just pick the Maharashtrian traits so well in Kaminey as well as Agneepath. Moreover, she too has been Sajid's leading lady in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and Anjaana Anjaani".
The movie will go on the cutting floor by the end of the year. So, guess Bhagat has plenty of time before he starts working on the big screen adaptation of his latest, 'Revolution 2020'.
