Pack-up for Prabuddha Dasgupta

Without any formal degree in photography, Prabuddha rose to the top purely riding upon his innate skills of capturing people coupled with his determination to rise to the zenith. He was also a great writer with almost 5 published books to his credit.

Last Sunday the noted photographer was out shooting for an ad film at Alibag when he all of a sudden suffered cardiac arrest and died. He was in his late 50s. His untimely demise has come as a shock to all those he had shot, both from the fashion and the film fraternity.

Dasgupta had won numerous awards and grants for his unprecedented contribution in the field of photography. He was one photographer who never hesitated from experimenting with his subjects and lending an expression to his creative side no matter how bold or unconventional his method. The man behind the lense had come under much heat after shooting the controversial Reebok ad featuring a nude Milind Soman and Madhu Sapre. He had also worked upon a collection of photographs that captured urban Indian women in the nude and published the collection in the name - 'Women'.

Mourning his death, designer Manav Gangwani told a leading daily, "Last year he was at my show and he wanted to shoot my collection. I am really sad that he is not amongst us. I think there is some uncanny connection that today on my show he is not here... While rehearsing we were in tears. But such is life and it has to move on."

"It's shocking news for all of us. He seemed to be fit and healthy. He was an inspiration to young photographers. He was fearless. He had the courage to do different things," said Editor at Better Photography magazine, K Madhavan Pillai.

Twitter too continues to overflow with messages for the deceased photographer. Actress Lara Dutta wrote on twitter, "I hear from twitter that Prabuddha Dasgupta has passed away. He shot me for the Femina cover right after I won Miss India. It was every woman's dream to be shot by Prabuddho! No one captured a woman like him. May his soul rest in peace."

"One of the finest photographers and a dear friend, Prabhuda, passed away. RIP. This has been a dark week," actor Farhan Akhtar tweeted.

Prabuddha was recipient of numerous awards and decorations like the The Yves Saint Laurent grant. The photographer has however immortalized himself through his works, many of which are a part of personal or institutional collections spread all across the globe.
