For those of you who found Van Wilder's assistant, Taj Mahal Badalandabad (Kal Penn) hilarious in the first movie, you will be even more fond of him in the sequel National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj. The movie follows Taj as he continues his studies at Camford University in London. Rejected from Fox and Hounds, an elite and pompous fraternity on campus, Taj joins the Cocks and Bulls house to compete for the Hastings Cup. The college humor and gags are brought to a whole new level; including an appearance of Balzac (Van's cute but well endowed pit-bull).
Taj helps transform the nerdy, socially awkward and uncouth members of Cocks and Bulls into the big dogs on campus. While doing all of this, he manages to get the girl, Charlotte (Lauren Cohan), teach a class, and embarrass members of the Fox and Hounds fraternity.
In the final scene, Taj and his arch-nemesis Pipp Everett (Daniel Percival) attempt to settle their dispute over a game of fencing. Pipp proclaims to settle their problem the way his British ancestors did, to which Taj responds, "You want to exploit me economically?" As a South Asian-American I found the moment extremely hilarious. Touché!
All in all Kal is a fiercely talented actor; but it is time for his true potential to shine through in a dramatic role. While we all loved his comedic performances in the past, I eagerly await his debut in a serious leading role.
The movie was a good way to spend time with some goofy friends and kept the crazy vibe of the original Van Wilder film.
