In the streets of New York, grabbing a bagel and coffee from a street vendor is routine for many. The coffee and bagels are expected. The vendors remain faceless.
"I'm just a Pakistani guy you know... selling coffee and doughnuts... that's it," describes the main character in the film Man Push Cart. The film focuses on one street vendor - Ahmad, an immigrant and former pop star from Pakistan struggling for a sense of worth, belonging, and identity in America.
In streets crowded with traffic and blinding lights, Ahmad arduously drags his coffee and bagel cart to his designated corner - preparing for the morning rush. After vending coffee and bagels throughout the day, he packs up his cart, drags it through the streets, and gets on the subway to go to his tiny Brooklyn apartment, selling knockoff DVDs for extra cash along the way. Day after day the routine continues.
Ahmad's life begins to liven up when he befriends a Spanish woman named Noemi (played by Leticia Dolera) who works at a nearby newspaper stand. He also encounters a wealthy Pakistani man (played by Charles Daniel Sandoval) who is shocked when he realizes that the vendor is a former Pakistani celebrity. Ahmad's life is filled with despair. His wife died the year before and he is saving to afford a place where he and his estranged son can live together.
Emotional, thought provoking and original, Man Push Cart has won Worldwide acclaim from the Venice, London, and Sundance Film Festivals. The BBC described the film as, "moving and touching, ... possessed of intelligence and integrity." The New York Times called it "Among the most striking American Independent Movies of the last year."
