Recently, when a few Sikh religious groups expressed their simmering discontent over a few scenes from the movie 'Son of Sardar', Ajay Devgan was quick to take corrective measures and assure them that the scenes that they considered objectionable would be chucked out of the movie.
The negotiation on the matter was initiated by Punjab's Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia, who was present in the meeting with a five member committee of SGPC and complainant Karnail Singh Peermohamad in a local hotel in Amritsar, Punjab.
Rebutting their argument that the movie indeed had certain scenes that were derogatory to the Sikh community and could therefore lead to their religious feelings being hurt, Ajay Devgan tried mollifying the lot by assuring them that the very fact that the movie had a Sikh hero went on to glorify the community rather than ridicule them in any way. "When the movie is focusing on Punjabis and Sikhs how can I hurt their sentiments," he said.
But at the same time Ajay assured them that although the movie was made with the idea of showing Punjabi Sikhs in a good light, if it has in the process hurt their religious sentiments in any way he would take the necessary measures to remove the content that they deem to be objectionable.
"I have cleared the objections and explained everything about the film and the context of the portions about which there were objections. We shall remove the portions which needed to be removed to clear the objections," he said.
Devgan further reiterated that he was very conscious about nothing wrong being shown in the film and even engaged a person from Punjab to tie the turbans. "In Bollywood films the turbans don't reflect the original style. We flew the turban expert from here over 20 times for the job so that the turbans of the characters should have a true style," he explained.
Majithia, the complainant, praised Devgan for showing great sensitivity and coming all the way from Hyderabad to Amritsar to address the issue. "Now all the objections have been addressed and Devgan deserves all praise for that. I am sure it will be a good movie which every Punjabi would watch," Majithia said.
