Kiran Spills the Beans on Aamir Khan
Aamir Khan is often accused by his directors, co-stars and even producers of interfering too much in the film's scripting and editing process, in a recent interview wife Kiran Rao shares her experience working with Aamir. Read on to find out what Kiran has to say about Aamir's work ethics.

Kiran Spills the Beans on Aamir Khan

Ram Gopal Varma, Mahesh Bhatt, Ashutosh Gowarikar and every other director that has worked with Aamir Khan has complained about Aamir's penchant for interfering with the film's creative content. In a recent interview, Aamir's wife Kiran Rao, the director of Dhobi Ghaat, which Aamir produced, claims that she had to fight with Aamir to protect her script. "Often scriptwriters do not have a choice when they give their script to a director or a producer. They are forced to helplessly see it being changed in whatever way the director or producer wants it to be. I had to fight with Aamir to protect my script, but thankfully, I got it made the way I wanted to," said Kiran while talking to an Indian news agency, at the on-going OSIAN Film Festival.

"Aamir kept saying that this could be added and that could be changed, but I fought with him and was able to shield my script," Kiran further revealed. "Every filmmaker thinks that their film gets a different life. When I was filming, I felt I was aiming for something, but I was not quite getting what I had in mind. That is where I struggled. But I got used to it and began to enjoy it too," says Kiran.

Presently, Kiran is busy working on another story, which she hopes to direct someday soon. When asked if she would ever be able to direct somebody else's script, Kiran answers, "Dhobi Ghat was my first film; before that I was not even sure if I would be able to write something like this. I enjoyed the process of writing, but I have to say I avoid it. Unless anyone writes something wonderful, I do not see myself making something that someone else has written."

Kiran is also into production, has worked behind the scenes of films such as Peepli Live, Taare Zameen Par, Delhi Belly, and most recently is assisting in the production of Talaash.

In addition, while most creative folks struggle to find a balance between the financial and artistic side of filmmaking, Kiran seems practical as she says, "One should not try to experiment just for the sake of being different and waste a producer's money. It is important to make a film that one feels honest about and if it breaks the rules, no problem, as long as you do not do it with the sole intention of breaking the rules. If you have that intention, then do not put anybody's tons of money to it and expect everybody to play along with your experiment. It is important to challenge yourself, but you have to be aware." Spoken like a true producer's wife!
