Abhishek Bachchan Focuses on the Business of Films
We always hear about actors who base their film decisions on script, but Abhishek says he also takes a film's budget into consideration. Find out what he had to say here.

Abhishek Bachchan Focuses on the Business of Films

There is no saying whether a film will be a hit or miss at the box office so every time an actor goes to sign a film, they know there is a risk. Most actors focus on the script and the weight of the role they are offered. Supporting cast must also be an important factor. Abhishek Bachchan is now saying that in his film decision process, he takes into consideration a film's budget.

"Each script has a budget and I think it is important to budget your film correctly," Abhishek says. He adds, "Box office receipts still account for 60 to 70 percent of the entire collection. That will always be the bulk of the business. Satellite is still very speculative. Right now satellite rights are very good for the producers, but after two to three years it might fall. The emphasis has to be always on making a qualitative film. If your film is not good, then selling satellite rights and music rights won't help."

Abhishek sounds like he is turning art and passion into clear cut business and he has no regrets for his stand. "That's just the way the dynamics of the industry work today! Stakes have become so high, cost of production has gone up so much that I think actors believe it's beneficial to be a part of it and become partners in the production houses. At the end of the day, we are responsible for the work that we are doing, we are responsible for our film. So I think actors, who can afford to do that, have decided that instead of burdening the film with astronomical costs, we'd become a partner in the film."

Having said all that, there is no denying that Abhishek goes above and beyond to promote his films. Again, he treats it like a job. We don't see Abhishek at parties and award shows, you only see him on the road promoting his next project. "My attitude towards it is that you spend so much time and energy in making a film, then why not spend the equal amount of time and energy promoting and marketing the film as well," he explains.

Abhishek's latest release, Bol Bachchan, has just crossed the 100-crore mark meaning he is doing something right, but if all stars looked at cinema as strictly business, do you think we'd lose our culture and art?
