Her debut film Lagaan created history, yet Gracy Singh didn't make that big a dent in the film circuit. Now, after films like Honey Irani's Armaan, Prakash Jha's Gangaajal and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Munnabhai MBBS, she is waiting for the film of her lifetime. With almost half a dozen films in hand, Gracy tells me about her journey to date.
Rajesh Shah: You seem to have a lot of films on hand?
Gracy Singh: Yeah, last year because two of my films got delayed, there will now be almost six films ready for release this year. It has been quite a hectic time. I have starred opposite Aftab Shivdasani in Muskaan, which is a teenage romance film with a thrill element involved. Wajah is a total thriller with Arbaaz Khan, Yeh Hai Zindagi and Raj Babbar's film starring Arya Babbar will start soon.
RS: Having Lagaan as a debut, were the expectations for you too high?
GS: Maybe. People expect a lot if you deliver in the first film itself but due to that lucky break I've got all the movies I'm doing today. I'll always be proud of Lagaan. While selecting a film today, I look at the script followed by my role in it. I consider myself fortunate that I have been offered truly diverse roles so early in my career, thanks to my debut alone.
"I want to be known for my versatility as an actress not for skin show. No offence to girls..."
RS: You seem to be a director's actress.
GS: I have complete faith in all the directors I work with. They are all very good at their job and are working hard on bringing out the best in me. I am humbled when Prakash Jha, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Honey Irani and company put so much faith in me. Today, due to their fine-tuning I think I look better than I did in my initial films. They made me realize that other than a good performance, a heroine should look good too. After all, this is the glamour profession.
RS: You don't seem to have come out of the village belle image.
GS: I don't mind being a non-glamorous heroine. I want to be known for my versatility as an actress not for skin show. No offence to girls who do it. They look good, I don't feel comfortable in revealing clothes. I have never taken this so-called image too seriously. People who have approached me know what kinds of roles suit me best. There is no dearth of girl-next-door roles.
RS: But when everyone is after glamour, do you consider yourself a misfit?
GS: Yeah, sometimes. I'm not a party person, I like staying at home. Here PR is a must but I can't do it. In an industry where a lot depends upon being seen at the right time, at the right place, I'm very low profile. I am comfortable being myself. I give my best to my work; I don't have the drive to push myself beyond a certain limit. I'm not a go-getter but I have ambitions and I am getting where I want to be!
