Mumbai - Suicide by Monica Chaudhury, daughter of noted Ghazal singer Chitra Singh, has sent shockwave throughout the Bollywood industry. Stress, anxiety and depression are often cited as the main reason behind someone taking his or her own life and this is especially true in the entertainment industry where someone does not hesitate to take the drastic step to escape from the immense pressure that comes with stardom.
In April 1993, Telegu actress Divya Bharti, who also made her mark in Bollywood, committed suicide by plunging to her death off a 5-storey apartment building in Mumbai, possibly fearing the shame she would have to face for keeping her marriage with Bollywood producer Sajid Nadiadwala a secret.
In September 1996, South Indian actress Silk Smitha, known for her glamorous appearances in softcore films and often called India's Marilyn Monroe, committed suicide in her Chennai apartment by hanging. Financial problems, disillusionment in love and an alcohol dependency apparently led to depression, which allegedly made her take the extreme step.
In February 2002, upcoming Tamil actress Pratyusha committed suicide by consuming poison - victim of a suicide pact with Siddartha Reddy, her boyfriend.
In July 2004, successful model, actress, VJ and former Miss India Universe Nafisa Joseph committed suicide after her relationship with her fiancé broke down.
A year later, in January, the legendary actress Parveen Babi, after years of suffering from schizophrenia and depression, "died of natural causes" in her Juhu residence in Mumbai.
The same year, Nafisa's friend and co-star in the television serial C.A.T.S, actress and model Kuljeet Randhawa also committed suicide while in her late 20s.
In April 2006, Geetanjali Nischol, wife of actor Navin Nischol, committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence and left behind a suicide note blaming her husband for her death.
Last year, beautician Shahnaz Husain's son Sameer Husain, a rap singer and the president of his mother's company, The Shahnaz Husain Group, jumped from the balcony of his house in Patna in January.
The same month, Sharanya Bhagyaraj, one of the upcoming Tamil actresses and daughter of actor-director K. Bhagyaraj, attempted to commit suicide by jumping off from the top floor of her house, unable to bear the pressure of the film industry.
A month later, actor Kunal Singh, who starred in several Hindi, Bhojpuri and South Indian films, committed suicide by hanging at his residence in Oshiwara, northwest suburb of Mumbai. Marital discord due to extramarital affair was suspected as the reason behind the drastic step.
In September, legendary Bollywood singer Asha Bhonsle's journalist daughter Varsha also tried committing suicide by consuming sleeping pills, just a day after her mother celebrated her 75th birthday.
Later in December, upcoming Telegu actress Bhargavi committed suicide at her residence in Banjara Hills by consuming poison. A second person, suspected to be her boyfriend, was also found dead by her side.
In May 2009, Monica Chaudhury, daughter of famous Ghazal singer Chitra Singh (by her first marriage) and a famous print model in the 1980s, took her life by hanging from the ceiling fan in her home in Mumbai. Extreme depression, following two failed marriages, has been cited as the main cause behind her death.
