Until June 2002, Pia Awal had always been perfectly healthy. Then just days after her 27th birthday, she was suddenly diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). With the support of the community and mainstream media, Pia was immensely blessed to find an identical match that would save her life in the fall of 2004. She received a stem-cell transplant from an anonymous donor in November 2004, at the University of Washington Medical Center.
